In 1913, members of the Millbrook community led by Rev. J. E. Lyall, collected and analyzed detailed sociological data about the Village of Millbrook and the Town of Washington, which they compiled in a 241-page document called the Millbrook Survey. This report, filled with dozens of charts, graphs, tables, and photos, provides a fascinating look into life in a small rural town just after the turn of the 20th century. Its data – and the conclusions the report’s authors draw from that data – are emblematic of the Progressive Era, which was at its height at the time of the survey’s compilation. Join us for a look inside the Lyall Report and discover what it can tell us today about the ambitions, aspirations – and prejudices – of Millbrook more than 100 years ago.
