A talk on the St. Cecelia Society, an amateur music and theater group that formed in Millbrook in the mid-1920s. Though active nearly a century ago, many still-familiar Millbrook names appear as members. Through archival documents and newly-made recordings, Millbrook native Joshua Groffman, Associate Professor of Music at Southern Connecticut State University, will tell the story of the group’s 1927 performance in the Thorne Building (then called Thorne Memorial Hall) of The Wild Rose, an operetta about the beauty and peace of country living. What emerges is a snapshot of cultural life in Millbrook at a time when the village was quite different from now and, in many ways, surprisingly similar to the bustling, multi-faceted community we know today.
